Simone began playing jazz, blues and classical music in Atlantic City to support herself, becoming known as a captivating musical storyteller, building a following all over the East Coast and launching a decades-long recording career. She was denied admission to the Curtis School of Music in Philadelphia after moving there with her family to attend. Cotten was a blues and folk musician who grew up in Carrboro.
